Rescue Stories

The 51

Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue, Inc., (Ridgeback Rescue) rescued 51 Rhodesian Ridgebacks (The 51) in early 2023. Many of these dogs have significant and expensive veterinary care and other needs, and will be with Ridgeback Rescue for quite some time before they are ready to join their forever adoptive homes. Your financial help is urgently needed to support the enormous expense associated with the care of these new members of the Msaada Ridgebacks family. Please Donate Now!

Ridgeback Rescue was approached by a USDA-licensed dog kennel that was closing its Ridgeback breeding program. Following extensive negotiations, all of the kennel's 51 Ridgebacks (The 51) were taken in by Ridgeback Rescue. Herculean efforts were undertaken by devoted volunteers to establish and prepare many volunteer foster homes and to transport The 51 to these homes across the USA. You might imagine the enormity of this task – both emotionally and financially – on our volunteers and Ridgeback Rescue.

All of The 51 required routine blood tests, heartworm tests, tick-borne disease panels, six months of heartworm medication, and spay or neuter surgery. Many of the Ridgebacks have significant issues that require surgery or treatment, such as dermoid sinus, megaesophagus, bilateral ectopic ureters, epilepsy, or heartworm disease. Early Onset Adult Deafness (EOAD) is also suspected in some of the dogs.

The treatments for these conditions can be expensive and some will require lengthy stays in Ridgeback Rescue foster homes before they are ready for adoption. Treatments for the more significant conditions are expected to range from $600 to $6,500 per dog. Routine veterinary care and procedures for all of The 51 will range from $500 to $1,500 per dog.

We are happy to report that, as of today, The 51 have made great strides! True to Ridgeback resilience, these dogs have wonderful temperaments, crave human companionship, and get along well with other dogs. Because they came from a rural environment, city life for these dogs will require adjustment and training. While many of The 51 will be with Ridgeback Rescue for a long time, others are ready and anxious to join their forever adoptive homes! Please submit an adoption application today if you are ready to welcome a Msaada Ridgeback into your family!

Announcement

We are very sad to announce that there will not be a 2024 rescue calendar. We needed to change the format; the Ridgeback-A-Day calendar required 365 photos (366 on Leap Years) and it was just too difficult to get that many photos and get the calendar printed in time for late November/early December mailing.

I know everyone will miss our calendar. But we are going to do our best to put together a plan so we can get a calendar out for 2025. So don’t dump all those adorable photos!! Hang onto them and check the website from time to time for more announcements as we work this project!

Thank you all so much for all your loyal support! I know many of you have sent in photos every year and I feel like I have gotten to know some of you through the calendar.

I am looking forward to being able to put out a call for photos some time next year!
