Meet Juma (ID3870)

We invite fellow RR lovers with kindred rescue souls to give Juma a shot at bowling you over with his spin on what being a Ridgie is all about! This handsome hound is on the shy/distrustful side which stems largely from the fact that he lived nearly the entire first year of his life in an outdoor pen with no socialization. While he has made great strides he does still demonstrate a mix of foibles that can be a bit of a challenge and as such we are seeking Ridgeback savvy adopters. We are guiding him to a more confident state of mind by laying out clear boundaries and achievable goals, coupled with the payoff of earned privileges to grow his sense of independence. His foibles include vocalizing and bristling in a defensive stance when he is unsure about someone or something. This can be off putting and confusing but it is mitigated easily enough by ensuring you convey to him that it is ok without coddling or reinforcing the behavior. He is at once playful and bashful (his awe shucks moments are pure Ridgie) and he is a bottomless pit of clever antics that will both entertain and exasperate you (yes, again a pure Ridgie trait). Juma enjoys engaging with his people and will signal you with a mischievous playbow when he is in the mood to romp and then game on as he bobs, dodges and weaves around in joy! When the romp is over he is anxious to plunk down with you for cuddle time (he thinks he is a lap dog). Juma had surgery on a dysplastic elbow and will need lifelong joint/mobility supplements. While he is in no way lame he will not be a candidate for a jogging companion. Juma will need to attend obedience classes to ramp up his skills both socially and in the vein of good manners. He has enjoyed some companion hounds but it is on a case by case basis (he does not do well with small dogs which may be due in part to his high prey drive which also precludes him from living with cats). The fact that he has a few quirks is what it is, but we have found that his endearing qualities more than make up for it.
